How much do you love your phone? (via BoingBoing and TechEBlog)

Our monthly roundup of what’s broken in the cell phone market:

Confirming a previous story, you cannot get out of a Verizon contract by faking your own death. (via Wired)

Feeling smug because your new company picks up the tab for your cell phone? Be careful. They might be watching you.

Apple decides to charge only 99c to make a ringtone from a song that you already own. (And yes, it is legal to make your own ringtones. Here’s how.)

Verizon says that we don’t need no open access, because the US market is so competitive. But in the last thirty days, Verizon agreed to buy Rural Cellular and Ramcell, AT&T agreed to buy Dobson, and T-Mobile announced that it was buying SunCom, all subject to regulatory approval. MetroPCS made a bid for Leap. For the record, no new cell phone networks launched in the US this month year.

And finally, two guys in Oregon strike a blow for freedom.
